Age: 19
Canon: The Last of Us
Canon Point: The Last of Us Part 2, After Ellie leaves the farm to go hunt down Abby.
Character History: Wiki
Canon Abilities: In Part 1, Ellie is very much unskilled - she can't swim, but she is scrappy with a knife and able to use a bow, explosives, and guns. This evolves into a proficiency with weapons as an adult. She can skillfully ride a horse, shooting zombies whether on horseback or hanging upside down, prone, or otherwise. In game she is also shown to be adept at modifying/upgrading these weapons as needed as well. Ellie also is adept with first aid, such as applying medicine w/ a syringe, makeshift stitches, bandages etc. Lastly, she is adept with a guitar which maybe isn't so helpful in a zombie apocalypse, but it drives the girls crazy!

🦋 Personality

Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.

  • Dead

  • Ellie spent years trying to reconcile that Joel took away her choice to die. She is someone who believes in doing what is right and she truly believed that by sacrificing herself, a cure could be made. She traveled across the country with Joel, went through so much, only to be told it was for nothing. Part of her probably was suspicious, that much was clear on her face at the end of Part 1, but she chose to trust him. When she found out the truth, it crushed her. Furthermore, the fact that Joel killed every single person in the hospital on his way to rescue her was devastating for her to learn.

Not only did she believe that she should have died, but 'dead' and by extension 'death' can be connected back to Joel. His ghost haunts the majority of Part 2. Ellie became driven by anger and revenge and decided to stop at nothing until she killed Abby. Before leaving the farm, Ellie has become traumatized by Joel's death, having nightmares and hallucinations, barely eating or sleeping. While she tried to find peace with Dina, she walked away from all of that to continue where she left off in Seattle.

  • Dance

  • For Ellie, dancing became a love language. She first started dating after Dina got drunk and kissed her while they danced. After everything that happened in Seattle, they filled their home with music and laughter and dancing. They raised Dina's son, JJ, together, along with some farm animals. It was peaceful and those few months, despite Ellie's trauma, were filled with love.

In contrast, Ellie and Abby became embroiled in their own dance, the never ending cycle of trauma, anger, and revenge. The few times their paths crossed, it became a fight to the death, costing both sides people they loved and scarring those who remained. In the end, Abby's friends all died and when Ellie left to pursue her, she very likely lost Dina and JJ as a consequence.

  • Sin

  • Ellie is severely shaken both by the sins she committed and those committed by Joel on her behalf. When she killed Nora, she went into shock, her hands shaking, blood splattered all over her. It was the same when she became physically ill after killing Owe and Mel, who was pregnant at the time. She was distraught when learning what Joel did at the hospital, and even told Abby later when they met again in the theater that there was no cure because of what Joel did and blamed herself. Ellie very much considers the trail of bodies left behind to keep her alive and for her revenge on Abby her 'sin'. That much is also apparent late in the game when she describes to Dina that she doesn't sleep or eat, that she still has nightmares. She explains this to Joel near the end of Part 1, that she is "still waiting for my turn". That is something Ellie still holds onto even into adulthood, that she lived while others could have been alive were it not for her or Joel.

  • Child

  • Ellie was a child who grew up very quickly. She was born in the middle of the end of the world and subsequently raised as an orphan in what is essentially a military compound. She knew early on that she would become a soldier like other children, but also lived her life apart from other children because of bullying and not really knowing how to interact with them. It is not until she meets Riley, that Ellie opens up. Riley was someone who taught her to have fun and take risks and her death is something Ellie has carried with her for years.

Not only does 'child' relate to who Ellie is but who she represents for other people. To Marlene, and by extension the other Fireflies, she is a chance at a cure. To Joel, she is just 'cargo' until she becomes like a daughter to him, filling the void left behind by his biological daughter, Sarah. When Ellie and Joel begin to open up to one another, they become this duo that works nearly in sync to one another. Ellie is scrappy where Joel is methodical, constantly pushing him to rely on her and not treat her as fragile or with kid gloves. She learns to use firearms from him, she learns how to track and hunt and to fend for herself mostly from things he taught her. Ellie has become his legacy as an adult, after his death. She carries her grief for him like a child who has lost their parent and weaponizes that grief into revenge.

  • Door

  • In Ellie's nightmares, there is always a stairwell and a door, just as when she found Joel. She sees it so often that she doesn't hesitate to run towards it, hoping to change the outcome of his death. There are a lot of doors that close in Ellie's life in her journey both before and after Joel. She lost her mom, Riley, Marlene, Tess, Sam and Henry, and then Joel. Ellie is someone who is afraid of being alone. She doesn't explain why in detail, but watching so many people come and go from her life in a world where nothing is certain comes with it's own baggage and trauma. Ellie is someone who feels her losses acutely.

Her pursuit of revenge is also a door in itself. She closes the door on the possibility of a peaceful life with Dina and JJ when she leaves the farm to chase down Abby again, after both nearly die and after Jessie did die, because Tommy talked her into it. One could even argue her revenge is a door she closed for others, as Joel saving her life was a door that was closed as a consequence. She never fulfilled her 'purpose' to die in the hospital.

IC Information
Name: ELLIE WILLIAMS
Canon: THE LAST OF US
Gender: FEMALE
Age: About 15 as she comes from towards the end of the game - her death is after she falls into the water and (nearly) drowns before being taken to the Fireflies
History: Last of Us Wiki
Personality: Ellie is a strange blend of innocence and grit. She is slow to warm up to others, but at the same time is innocent enough that she dislikes killing or seeing Joel kill others. On more than one occasion she has either cursed aloud after he kills an enemy human or has asked him not to do so (such as when they partner up with Sam and Henry). That doesn't seem to stop her from hurting other people who threaten her or Joel. Ellie, though ineffective when fighting someone head on, is quick on her feet and is also a quick thinker in a pinch.

Ellie is a child with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She realizes just how important she is when it comes to fighting the infected and just how precious her survival is to others. It doesn't stop her from lashing out at Joel when he acts like a jerk and can't seem to get close to her. He tries to pawn her off onto his brother Tommy so that he can take her to the Fireflies and she responds by running away and getting angry. Her biggest fear is being alone and the fact that he tries to abandon her – in her eyes – is a great insult to her. She knows there are parts of him that she can't reach, such as talking about his deceased daughter, Sarah, to which he responds “You ware walking on mighty thin ice”.

She tries to ask him about the world before the Infected and he will give her pieces without giving too much of his past (namely about Sarah or his family). He refuses to talk to her about Tess when Ellie tries to apologize for her sacrifice that resulted in their escape from an ambush and this seems to cause unease for a time between them, among other situations that only further it. Ellie earnestly wants to learn about him, given that he is carting her around just as cargo. She doesn't want to be just cargo to him and that is obvious.

Ellie can be quite reckless in her desire to help him and prove herself capable, putting herself in danger on more than one occasion. This results in Joel becoming furious with her and her being argumentative in return. If there is one thing Ellie hates it is that she might be seen as incapable of taking care of herself. This comes from her time in the orphanage that she grew up in up until she meets Marlene of the Fireflies and Joel. The only thing she has tying her to a past is the pocket knife Marlene gave her that she claims belonged to Ellie's mother. It seems that through Marlene's influence, Ellie has formed quite an attachment to her.

This can be attributed to Ellie's relationship with Riley Abel, a deceased friend of hers. The two girls met in the Boston Quarantine zone and became friends after a few scuffles - Riley stealing her walkman and Ellie being unwilling to trust others - but they form a fast bond. Riley leaves for a time to join the Fireflies and the two reconnect when she returns, leaving the quarantine zone to goof off in an abandoned mall. The two became infected together, both receiving bites, and Riley died while Ellie lived. She holds a tremendous amount of guilt for this and it is possibly what drives her to want to help the Fireflies and become their cure for the virus. Joel thwarts this in the end, of course, as he has come to see Ellie as a second daughter and refuses to lose another child when he can prevent it from happening. Ellie and Riley's relationship was one with a potential for romance, proven when Ellie kisses her and begs her not to leave her to join the Fireflies. Riley consents and the two stay together until they are both bitten. Ellie is dissatisfied that she could not die with Riley, telling Joel that she is “still waiting for my turn”. She never gets her turn and it doesn't seem as if the virus will continue to progress inside of her any time soon, by the epilogue.

As for Ellie's relationship with Joel: it is complicated. Ellie eventually looks up to him and Joel eventually sees her as a daughter. Joel harbors regrets for what happened to Sarah and as a result refuses to get close to others. Ellie understands loss as well, but she becomes easily frustrated with Joel's aloof nature and noncommittal grunts. He keeps her at a distance for a long time, but there are moments between them that allow the two of them to eventually thaw their distant natures. She tries to joke with him to lighten the mood and asks him questions about the world before the outbreak. Joel in turn will bring her comic books as he finds them and occasionally humor her bad puns. He also becomes fiercely protective and fatherly to her, something that Ellie unconsciously clings to. That certainly doesn't stop them from bickering if Ellie is being a smart ass. He is also the first to acknowledge when Ellie has done a job well done, when it doesn't involve endangering herself, much to her elation. Joel over time begins to develop stronger parental instinct type feelings for Ellie, calling her "baby girl" after the cannibal, David, tries to hurt her and she hacks him to pieces. This is significant because of the fact that this was the nickname that he calls Sarah by when she was still alive. Ellie in turn is relieved when he comes to save her. The two make quite the team together and have a strong bond.

After Riley, Ellie has never really spent much time with other children her own age. Her time was spent with Marlene or in Boston's Quarantine Zone being a loner. She does interact briefly with two brothers - Henry and Sam - for a time. Sam is closer to her age while Henry is older, though not as old as Joel. She shows a freer side of herself when she talks to Sam, laughing and joking with him as the group travels together. Sam asks her at one point about her views on life and death, to which Ellie responds that she doesn't believe in the afterlife - or that it is what waits for those who are turned. When Sam himself is turned and he attacks her, Ellie grieves for him and Henry after the two have died. Joel - as usual - does not want to talk about unpleasant things. This seems to be their struggle with one another - Ellie wants to open up to him and whenever she tries he shuts her down. He does the same thing when Ellie tries to talk to Joel after his partner, Tess, dies for their safety. This does change gradually over the course of the game but it is a hard bridge for her to gap and even harder when it comes to talking about her own past.

Ellie is a bit of an energetic girl, finding excitement in strange things like old movie posters, sci-fi comics, and video games. Some little oddball facts about her: her favorite animal is dinosaurs and she thinks gnomes are cute. She cannot swim and often times Joel will have to find a raft out of a piece of drifting debris to move her across bodies of water. She doesn't understand our current media's celebrity trend of being overly thin and thinks its stupid – understandable given the lack of food supply in her time. Ellie is definitely not afraid to speak her mind, quickly swearing and cursing someone out who makes her angry. This could be attributed to stress after Riley's death as she doesn't swear nearly as much before this incident.

Over all, Ellie is a good and resourceful kid, albeit with a few rough edges to her. While she has never met her mother, it is obvious in subtle ways that she cares about her and misses her. In the Winter chapters, if you go through her bag and look at the letter and turn it to the back, Ellie will comment saying "I'm trying to make you proud." How Ellie adjusts over time from being on the sidelines to trying to be in charge is a mark of her character growth, though she still follows Joel's lead first and foremost. The two become close enough that they both decide to go to Jackson to stay with Joel's brother Tommy and his group, forming a bit of a home for the two of them to come back to.

Powers/Abilities: Ellie starts the game relatively unskilled. She can't swim and lacks physical strength in a lot of instances and this is a great hindrance to her survival. At the start, her only weapon is a switchblade that she carries with her throughout the game but she eventually learns how to use a hunting rifle from Joel when he decides she is ready. She also learns to use a pistol, bow, and explosives.

Ellie knows how to ride horses, as shown during the winter arc of the story and in Left Behind. She also teaches herself to whistle, something that gives her great pride, and she is capable of leaping onto people's backs and tackling them to the ground if they attack Joel. These are merely her basic abilities and Ellie's most important contribution is her immunity to the fungus that has created the Infected. Any bites or the like will not harm her the way they might someone else.

Ellie also knows how to administer basic first aid as well as stitches, shown when she patches Joel up and later uses a needle and gives him antibiotics after he is impaled at one point in the story. He recovers fairly quickly under her treatment. She is also very sneaky and able to leap onto grown men and attack them with precision.

Later on it is thought that she could very well be the cure for the disease, though this is not proven nor confirmed as Joel is firmly against the Fireflies' method of study - cutting her brain out to study the fungus deposits in the tissue to find out why she is immune and to see if there is a way to reverse engineer a cure.

Sample: She really hated water. That was the first thought in her mind as the two of them began to cross it in the tunnels. She could hear the shrieks and moans of infected behind them, echoing off the walls and in her ears. They were far away but any moment now that could change and she knew that. Just as in a moment everything had changed. She barely noticed her bite anymore, even if it was always in her thoughts lately. She wanted to do the right thing, to help people if she could. Snapping back to reality, she jumps onto the bus floating in the water.

If there was one thing she hated it was being near water and this current was making her uneasy. For now, she endured it for him. Joel wouldn't let her drown, the mantra that was repeated in her head as she walked across the tipped vehicle. All at once she grows more nervous when Joel jumps onto the bus and it begins to shake. Scurrying to safety, Ellie stands there waiting for Joel to join her. It didn't matter about her own safety anymore because Joel was still out there and the restlessness takes over. What can she do? Waiting here was stupid, but it was what he wanted and the last thing she wanted was to get back on that bus again to make sure he made it with her.

"Joel!" He doesn't join her. The bus is pushed by the current and he slips through the doors. No matter how many times he says for her to stay put, instinct makes her move. Small fists are ineffective against the doors and it only makes her hit them harder. Staring down at Joel is the only thing ebbing the fear of the water away. She couldn't be alone again. She couldn't lose him.

"Open you piece of shit!" she screams, banging on it one more time. The glass is cracked beneath her and hopefully that meant the door was weakening. The door moving is a relief but it is short lived as the bus tips and all at once fear takes hold again. She can hear Joel pleading to give him her hand but it isn't enough. It's too late now and the water comes rushing up and all at once she's in it and drifting faster than she can think away from him. The numb silence that follows is the last thing she remembers. That, and Joel calling her name. Was she going to die? No, she didn't want it to be for nothing. The last fucking thing she wanted was to die like this. They were going to help so many people! She couldn't die like this.

Yet, it didn't seem to matter. Her limbs felt heavy and already consciousness began to slip away, giving way to darkness and water surrounding her. Ah, she really should have learned to swim, huh. Maybe if they got out of this, Joel could teach her? It was bullshti really. She just wanted to hear him sing to her. All she needed was for him to tell her everything was alright and she would be fine again. Joel would come save her, right? Distantly, as consciousness slipped away, she thought she felt his presence, there in the water. Ah, he made it. Let her rest for now. He wouldn't let her die like this.

Mindset: The manner of Ellie's death is enough to make her panic at first. She can't swim so drowning is pretty much going to make her upset. Not having Joel around is also going to be hard on her as she is afraid of being alone and being without him pretty much equates to being alone. She will probably be very mouthy as a defense mechanism and in general and not be willing to make friends and play nice.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Ellie is afraid of being alone. She is completely fearless in a lot of other aspects of her life but if she is abandoned or left alone she feels completely afraid. Ellie is also incapable of swimming and seems to show a certain level of fear when she finds herself submerged into water, though will try to push through it for Joel. He generally accommodates this fear by bringing rafts to her to swim on. Ellie feels especially responsible for others and this can be quite the major flaw when it comes to her desire to be the cure for the virus. She is also an assault survivor. David, a cannibal, tried to attack her and it is implied that he also tried to rape her. There could be some decent glitches to work around with this, or perhaps some not quite so awful. That is totally up to you mods though have at it.
